Canon History: Electro @ the Marvel Animated Wiki
Canon Personality: The first thing anyone will learn about Electro is that he's got a bit of a temper. Or, well, a lot of a temper. He's sort of just real angry all the time and only the slightest provocation is necessary to bring it to the surface. He's like a live wire; you don't have to do much to get yourself shocked. And to a point, you can't exactly fault the guy. His whole life's been kind of ruined, he can't eat or drink anymore, and his condition can't possibly be painless. Yeah, that'd make anyone pretty grumpy. The problem arises when he gets angry over much smaller slights or even things that... well, the other party can't help, really.
It doesn't help that he holds a hell of a grudge. If you manage to get on Electro's bad side, don't expect to turn things around in the future. The second he's decided he hates you, that's pretty much it. Spider-Man found that one out when he tried to make things right and just sort of... got electrocuted for the trouble. Yeah, that happens. And despite having bigger things to worry about, beating Spider-Man remains high on his priority list... pretty much always, because see, it's personal now. And Electro's a real spiteful motherfucker. Letting things go is so not his style.
Of course, this anger just as often blinds Electro completely, which obviously our friendly neighborhood hero exploits... like, basically every single time he fights the guy? Like, every time? Electro, buddy. Because, yeah, when Electro gets real pissed? He stops being careful with his powers. He just starts blasting electricity left and right to hit whoever's getting to him (probably Spider-Man) with absolutely no regard for whatever else is around him. Or whoever, for that matter. It's the #1 way of defeating him. And sometimes you don't even need to get him angry, because as far as problem solving goes, this is pretty much... Electro's only trick. Just shoot lighting at it. Problem gone. Even if that problem is "an ally is stuck", clearly shooting electricity is still totally the answer.
What do you mean, that fries people? That sounds fake. It's fine.
Yeah, you might notice that Electro is not... exactly... the brightest bulb in any sense other than the extremely literal. Doc Ock calls him charmingly uncomplicated and damn it if he ain't right. His problem solving skills, as mentioned? Bad. His ability to plan? Also bad. You can basically guarantee that he doesn't really understand Otto's plans ever, but he knows Otto is smart so the plan must be good. Sure. Honestly, if he was just a little more clever, it's likely that he would've defeated Spider-Man ages ago. With that powerset, he could be the most dangerous member of his little rogues' gallery, by far, but he sure doesn't know how to actually apply himself.
Then there's on a social level, because really anyone who even vaguely gets people could see that Otto couldn't give less of a shit about Electro as a person, clearly just using him because he's powerful, definitely not someone worth being so loyal to. But Electro himself doesn't see this and probably wouldn't even if someone pointed this out to him.
He's not exactly good at seeing things as they really are anyway. There's a lot of... self delusion going on. Which early on especially shows in the way he blames everyone around him for things going wrong in his life, ignoring his own role in it - including the fact that the accident that turned him into Electro was kind of... his own fault. But again, also shows in the way that he puts Doc Ock on a pedestal, despite just being a tool to him. And, perhaps, most clear in the way that I've had to refer to him as Electro in the whole app, because he refuses to acknowledge the name Max anymore. This escalates from preference to full blown denial that he even knows anyone by that name. The identities of Max and Electro are distinctly different to him now. Not because of any sort of acceptance of who and what he is now, but because that's how it has to be for him to stay even remotely functional. He doesn't take it well when you challenge him on this. You really wanna see that temper of his in action? Just try calling him Max instead of Electro.
It'd be easy enough to just dismiss him as a complete jerk and, don't misunderstand, he absolutely is a jerk. But that's not to say Electro's never nice. His loyalty to Doctor Octopus, while definitely foolish, is sweet in its own way. And while he can be abrasive with the rest of the Sinister Six sometimes, he seems to have a genuine desire to be helpful to them... even if they wish he would help less. It's the thought that counts. Maybe just stick to the thought, Electro, you'll shock less people. But when he's not being an idiot hurting his own team, he seems to work together with others pretty okay. So there's still a good dude in there somewhere, but oh boy has it gotten lost in all of the... well. Everything above, pretty much.
And while he does get lost in his own bad impulsive decisions, he is very good at following orders... assuming he even thinks you're worth listening to, which is harder to achieve, but. Look. If you can get to the level of respect he has for Doctor Octopus, then yes, he is extremely good at doing what he's told. Hey, as has been made very clear, he's got the capacity to be crazy loyal. And maybe that's because he just gets extremely attached to the few people who (he feels) treat him decently, but... well fine, that's exactly how it is. He's. Trying.
Further, it seems that he's a pretty decent actor, too. Maybe because he has so much practice lying to himself he's gotten good at lying to other people. But he's definitely good enough to convince Ravencroft he was rehabilitated when he was literally only waiting to get out so he could help Doc Ock. And he sure convinced them that he'd turned against him later, too, to help sell Otto as not a threat. Heck, maybe Max was in drama club in high school, who the fuck knows. Still, pretty impressive managing to fool psychologists like that.
Personality Shifts: Overall, Electro didn't change too much in his little murdergame experience. It was only for a small window of time, after all. But as it was a high stress environment, what with the kidnapping and being told to murder someone, it didn't not have an effect on him.
He's still all too impulsive, but being cut off from his powers for a few weeks forced him to hold back more. And... yes, the second he got his powers back, he went right back to just blasting everything, but he at least didn't actually electrify anyone living. Even if he... absolutely threatened it anyway. And might have if the guy hadn't been their only real lead to getting out of there-- listen, BABY STEPS, OKAY.
And hey, he managed to form an actually positive connection in the form of Penny. She actually respected his wishes to be called Electro to the point of changing his profile for him and was so sweetly polite the entire time that it was actually impossible to hate her, so hey. He likes this robot girl pretty alright. Look at you, Electro, learning how to be nice to... well, at least one person. Again. It's... a start.
Abilities:
≫ Walking generator: Electro is literally constantly generating electricity, to the point where it's legitimately unclear how human he still is. At the very least, most of his features are obscured by electricity and he's definitely no longer capable of, you know, eating or drinking. So he's... extremely low maintenance, at least! On the flip side, being around anything tech based tends to end not so great. He's a bit better at controlling that now and usually won't fuck shit up just by existing near it anymore, when he's extremely emotional he can short out nearby tech. Oops. Of course, being electricity also means he can charge things real easily just... by touching them. And on the flipside, if he's charged with electricity from another source, he becomes more powerful. Also it lets him manipulate technology? I guess? He uses a pay phone without money by just zapping it, I don't know, I doubt he can do fine hacking but he can make something go, it's a thing.
≫ Electric Blasts: Well, he's not just made of electricity, Electro can also use it. Mainly by shooting it as big blasts, just big ol' arcs of lightning. Which seem to be generally survivable, if not charged up to maximum power, but will definitely put an ordinary human down for the count. And then other times it's bad enough to melt rubber, listen, it's the power the plot demands what do you want from me. Electricity is like magic, right.
≫ Pulse: Creates an electric pulse, which extends in a dome shape around Electro, electrifying anything that's too close to it.
≫ Electricity Lift: Electro can fire electricity down at the ground to boost himself up, essentially letting him fly to an extent. And at one point he's even seen using his electricity to glide around a rooftop, which... sure okay. I guess that's the same concept as this. Sure.
≫ Containment Suit: Not a power, just noteworthy. The suit Electro wears has been completely insulated. The main purpose of which seems to be protecting anyone around him from getting electrocuted. It does not seem to stop the interference with technology when he's upset, but hey, at least you can be around him without, you know, dying. It's basically the one way he can touch anything or anyone without frying them. The helmet and gloves can be taken off manually, or disabled and folded up into the suit. Additionally, there is a slot for his mouth that can open up on its own, it's just... entirely useless since he doesn't eat anymore.
≫ Electrician: ...not something I expect will ever come up, but it should be noted that hey. Max was an electrician, so he has... those skills! That... I mean, that is a thing, might as well put it somewhere.
Inventory:
≫ the containment suit he's wearing, so he doesn't electrocute everything that touches him. that's literally it, he's got nothing else on him, I don't think he even has pockets.
